Rome - City of Rome - in the south-central part of the Oneida County
Native Americans called the area Deo-Wain-Sta, or The Great Carrying Place, referring to the portage between the Mohawk River and Wood Creek. The portage was also known as the Oneida Carrying Place.
Boats coming up the Mohawk River had to transfer their cargo (and boats) 1.7 miles overland to continue
west to Lake Ontario. This important east/west trade route was later formalized by construction of the Erie Canal.
The Rome Sand Plains is a 15,000-acre inland pine barrens within the city, that consists of a mosaic of high
sand dunes and low peat bogs, mixed northern hardwood forests, meadows and wetlands. It is one of only a handful of inland pine barrens remaining in the United States.

The area that is now Schenectady was originally the land of the Mohawk tribe of the Iroquois Nation. When
Dutch settlers arrived in the Hudson Valley in the middle of the 17th century, the Mohawk called the settlement
at Fort Orange "Schau-naugh-ta-da", meaning "over the pine plains." Eventually, this word entered the lexicon
of the Dutch settlers, but the meaning was reversed, and the name referred to the bend in the Mohawk River where the city lies today.

Erie Canal [ Eriekanaal ]
The Erie Canal is famous in song and story. Proposed in 1808 and completed in 1825, the canal links the
waters of Lake Erie in the west to the Hudson River in the east. An engineering marvel when it was built, some called it the Eighth Wonder of the World.
In order to open the country west of the Appalachian Mountains to settlers and to offer a cheap and safe
